60 years of Interhome: from Swiss pioneer to a European success story
Interhome is celebrating its 60th anniversary: launched in 1965 as a pioneer in holiday home rentals, the company is now one of Europe's leading holiday home providers. From the very beginning, Interhome has pursued the goal of providing owners and guests with a truly hassle-free experience – supported by modern technologies and reliable services. The portfolio of holiday homes can be booked worldwide via more than 55,000 sales partners, including leading online travel agencies and booking platforms.
Interhome's story all began on 7 April 1965 when two Swiss tourism pioneers, Bruno Franzen and Werner Frey, launched the venture – at that time still under the company name of Swiss Chalets. Interhome has since established itself as a leading specialist and permanent fixture for holiday home breaks in a changing marketplace. The portfolio currently comprises around 40,000 holiday homes and apartments in over 20 countries as well as 120 local service offices in popular holiday regions. Around 670 employees in 15 countries help to ensure that guests enjoy an unforgettable holiday from the moment they book their holiday home to the time they return home.
Guests from all over the world
The top 5 countries of origin for Interhome guests in the 2024/25 booking year are Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Up by 12.5% compared to the same period last year, guests from the US occupy 12th place in the country ranking. However, guests from Australia, Israel, South Korea, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, China and Taiwan, among others, also book holiday accommodation through the Swiss holiday home provider. Providing personal local service, the company is now a trusted partner for owners and holiday guests and offers far more than just a booking platform.
A pioneer in the digital transformation
People and technology go hand in hand at Interhome: a modern IT system was introduced way back in 1980. Some 27 years ago in 1998, guests were able to book their holiday accommodation online via the first Interhome website, order catalogues and obtain comprehensive information. "We are fully digital, dynamic and technology-led and, as a holiday home manager and booking platform, we enjoy the trust of both our owners and guests. Over the decades, we have been able to adapt to changing customer needs," emphasises Sylvia Epaillard, Co-CEO of Interhome.
Service quality with local teams
Jörg Herrmann, Co-CEO of Interhome, highlights the importance of continuity in addition to constant change: "Even though our business is constantly changing, our core values remain the same: committed employees, a trusting working relationship with our owners and our unwavering commitment to excellent service." A special feature of Interhome are its local service offices – also referred to as LSOs for short. They ensure outstanding service quality through local contact persons, both for owners and guests. Interhome's approach ensures excellent service in the management and rental of holiday properties.
Interhome sets standards in sustainability
The holiday home specialist is considered a pioneer in the field of sustainable holiday home rentals. With the science-based ECOmodation label, Interhome developed a system in 2024 that recognises certified holiday accommodation which meets 24 clearly defined ecological criteria. Following the current certification process, guests will be able to use the website's filter function to search specifically for holiday homes and apartments that have been awarded the sustainability label. Interhome's long-term goal is for ECOmodation to serve as a reliable standard in the search for sustainable holiday accommodation throughout the industry for the constantly growing target group of environmentally aware holiday guests.
