Greater transparency for more sustainable travel at Hotelplan: carbon footprint and certified accommodation visible online
As of March 2025, Hotelplan has been transparently indicating the carbon footprint of travel on its website. Travellers can also choose from around 1200 accommodation options certified as sustainable. The designation of sustainable accommodation has been further developed in cooperation with FAIRWEG. In addition, membership of KlimaLink ensures that the CO₂e emissions of travel components are calculated in accordance with a uniform industry standard and displayed clearly.
Travellers are attaching greater importance to sustainability and Hotelplan Group believes it has a duty to actively promote more sustainable tourism. The travel group is continuously developing its sustainability strategy and working closely with partner companies to increase the number of more sustainable travel options in a targeted way.
Greater transparency thanks to the reporting of our CO₂e footprint
To make it easier for customers to search for more sustainable options, hotelplan.ch has been displaying the CO₂e footprint of all trips directly in the search results and on the hotel pages since March. The information on the CO₂e footprint for the flight and hotel travel components can be viewed in “My Account” at www.hotelplan.ch and will soon also be visible at the checkout stage of the booking process as well as in customers’ personal travel documents. This provides travellers with a clear overview of the climate impact of their trip and gives them the opportunity to make a Sustainable Aviation Fuel contribution in order to reduce flight-related emissions.
This level of transparency on the CO₂e footprint is made possible by Hotelplan Group's membership of KlimaLink, an association that operates a platform for calculating the CO₂e emissions of travel components. In specific terms, the emissions for the flight and hotel travel components are currently reported transparently on the basis of well-founded calculations by KlimaLink. Other travel components, such as rail, car and bus, will soon be included too. This will create a uniform CO₂e calculation standard for the tourism industry and a comparable and reliable basis for customers to make more sustainable travel decisions.
25% more hotels designated as sustainable accommodation
The designation of more sustainable accommodation has been significantly expanded thanks to a partnership with FAIRWEG, a company that operates a database of certified hotels. Up until now, customers have been able to look for sustainable accommodation at hotelplan.ch and migros-ferien.ch based on three certification schemes (Travelife, GreenKey and EarthCheck). 13 addition-al certificates were added to hotelplan.ch in March 2025. The hotels are designated with a special icon and customers can use a search filter to select more sustainable accommodation. Customers can find detailed information on the respective certificates in the hotel description. In the Hotelplan and Migros Ferien catalogues, hotels that hold at least one of the selected certificates are also iden-tified with an icon.
The inclusion of additional certificates means the number of hotels designated as sustainable in the Hotelplan and Migros Ferien portfolio has increased significantly by around 25% – customers now have a choice of around 1200 accommodation options certified to the highest industry standards. The certified hotels are regularly assessed to ensure they meet environmental, social and economic sustainability criteria as part of an independent audit.
Gradual introduction for other brands
Alexander Brändle, Chief Digital & Strategy Officer Hotelplan Group, is responsible for the group-wide sustainability strategy and explains the changes in the following way: "I'm delighted we are able to adopt uniform industry solutions and standards thanks to our collaboration with FAIRWEG and our membership of KlimaLink. The next step for us is to incorporate the information on the carbon footprint and the additional certificates at migros-ferien.ch and to gradually roll them out for other Hotelplan Group brands too. This will allow us to provide our customers with a reliable and comparable basis for more sustainable travel decision-making."
