Summer Holidays 2025: Surprising Newcomers Among Most Popular Destinations
The travel plans of the Swiss for summer 2025 show interesting changes compared to the previous year: larger groups, new destinations, and longer stays. This is revealed in an analysis of Interhome booking data for the summer months.
The classic Mediterranean destinations remain among the top holiday locations for vacation rental specialist Interhome this summer. Italy, France, and Croatia are particularly popular among the Swiss. However, some newcomers have made it into the top rankings: Norway and the Czech Republic have entered the top 10. Meanwhile, Switzerland, which was still on the podium in 2024, and Spain each lost three positions.
2025 | 2024 | |
---|---|---|
1 | Italy | Switzerland |
2 | France | Italy |
3 | Croatia | France |
4 | Switzerland | Spain |
5 | Germany | Croatia |
6 | Austria | Austria |
7 | Spain | Finland |
8 | Norway | Germany |
9 | Sweden | Denmark |
10 | Czech Republic | Sweden |
Roger Müller, CPO of Interhome, explains the new ranking as follows: “After the weather-related exceptional summer of 2024, many Swiss are deliberately seeking sunny and reliable destinations in 2025. They want to escape the rain, discover something new – and at the same time save on travel costs. That’s why nearby self-drive destinations remain popular.”
Weekend trips with family or friends on the rise
Changes are also evident in the average group size per booking in 2025: while in 2024 the average was 3.8 people, this year it is four people. Short trips in larger groups are particularly popular: for three-day stays, the average group size is five people – extended weekends are especially popular among families or patchwork families traveling together.
Roger Müller explains: “Groups appreciate vacation homes because they offer both private space and areas for socializing. Large, well-equipped kitchens for cooking together are especially in demand. We are also seeing a growing trend of companies booking holiday homes for team events and multi-person workations.”
Swiss catching up on longer holidays
As in the previous year, one week remains the most popular duration of stay for the summer months of June, July, and August in 2025. However, longer holidays are gaining significant popularity: 25% of Swiss Interhome guests have booked a two-week trip for this summer – a 10 percentage point increase compared to 2024. In international comparison, the Swiss are catching up. In Germany, 28%, and in France even 32% of Interhome customers have booked a two-week stay this summer – longer holidays are already well established in these markets. There is also a noticeable increase in demand for flexible timing: stays of 6, 9, or 10 days are being booked more frequently.
More bookings already in december
Swiss holidaymakers prefer to book their summer holidays early: most bookings are made in January, followed by February and December. December shows the strongest growth – with 24% more bookings than the previous year.
