People & Places – sustainable development of holiday offerings and destinations

Hotelplan Group supports partner companies and destinations in becoming more sustainable. We are developing more sustainable offerings for our customers and proactively provide information about alternatives.

Labelling more sustainable accommodation and climate protection contributions

Hotelplan Group helps its customers to choose more sustainable holidays. Our portfolio includes more than 1,500 accommodation options certified to the highest industry standards. Special filters on our web pages enable our customers to search for such accommodation in a targeted way. What’s more, when customers book their holiday, we offer them the chance to make a voluntary contribution to sustainable aviation fuel or myclimate carbon-offsetting projects.

Support for sustainability projects at our destinations

We provide loans of up to CHF 10 million to finance sustainability projects in tourist destinations. The first projects have already been implemented. For example, thanks to our support, two hotels in the Turkish resort of Side now generate most of their electricity from climate-friendly solar power. We also support the sustainability of partner businesses through training programs, for example to help hotels achieve sustainability certification.

Selected initiatives of the business units

Migros Ferien’s rail-based package holidays have enjoyed great popularity since they were first introduced. Trains have now become the most popular mode of transport for city breaks in neighbouring countries. There is also strong demand for rail round trips, for example in Italy or the Benelux countries. Migros Ferien is continuously expanding its range of offers to promote sustainable travel further.

Since November 2022, Hotelplan Suisse has only been printing travel documents for customers on request – and for a fee. All the proceeds of this measure are donated to a variety of social and ecological projects. In 2024, for example, the Road to 1 Billion Bottles project by #tide was supported, which helps local communities keep oceans and coastlines clean.

Together with other travel-industry companies, Hotelplan Group is working to make product design more climate-friendly. Within the framework of a pilot project run under the auspices of the non-profit Futouris e.V., we have set ourselves the goal of reducing climate emissions during product development. In addition to practical tools and training programs, we are developing standardised metrics that enable the impact travel products have on the climate to be assessed and adapted.
